Host Family Responsibilities

  1. Treat the student as a member of the family.
  2. Give the student a house key.
  3. Provide the student with three healthy meals per day, including a bag lunch for school days and a light evening snack.
  4. Provide a bed, a lamp, a table and a chair for the student's room.
  5. Provide weekly linens and towels for the student.
  6. Set reasonable household rules including curfew. If your student plans to go out, know where and with whom the student is going. Keep the student’s cell phone number on hand.
  7. Communicate with the student on a regular basis.
  8. Assist the student if medical attention is needed and report it to Homestay Select Inc. immediately. The student will have medical insurance. Family doctors or Walk In clinics are advisable. Emergency department in a hospital can be very expensive with a long waiting period. However if it’s necessary that the student will be taken to the hospital emergency please do so. The student is solely responsible for any medical expenses.
  9. Show the student how to get to school and come home the first day if you are not a walking distance to the school. We advise the host family to go with the student by public transportation on the first day of school so the student will know which bus to take.
  10. Let the student know where to buy weekly bus passes, as well as the location of local banks, attractions, entertainment, and shopping malls.
  11. Sit down with the student the day after arrival to discuss household rules in order to avoid misunderstandings.

Host families will be interviewed in their homes in order to fill out an application form. Our staff will check the bedroom and the washroom the student will be using, as well as the common areas of the home.

Hosting an international student is a rewarding experience. You can experience a new culture from the comfort of your own home. Call us at 905-785-9823 to book an appointment for an interview.
